A. You have to wait them out. Turtles can go months without eating. Keep offering the veggies, eventually they will eat it. All turtles grow differently, unfortunately the only way to tell age accurately is to know their hatch date.

How do you block off aquarium heaters from turtles?
Q. My turtle is a 1.75" red-eared slider hatchling. I never had a heater in the summer because the water stayed warm, but now it's too cold. What type of heater should I get? I've also heard a lot of stories about turtles getting burned from the heaters, so how do you block them off from turtles with them still able to heat the water?
Asked by Gina - Fri Jan 11 21:32:46 2008 - - 4 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Depending on the size of your tank would tell you what size of heater to get. They come in specific sizes for tanks. Their are also special covers for the specific reason of keeping your pet from being burned. Its a mesh with suction cups. You should be able to find it at Petsmart or Petco.

Can we put common map turtles with fish in the same tank?
Q. I bought some turtles for the kids in China Town, NY and end up putting them in the same tank with the Fish. I got a nice turtle dock, but I notice that the turtles snaps at the Underwater frogs. Is it safe to put the turtles in the same tank or should they be separated?
Asked by A.J. - Sun Sep 2 10:37:12 2007 - - 4 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Well usually turtles will eat anything put with them, snails, crabs, fish whatever regardless of size. If you treasure the fish, get another tank for the turtles. However, those turtles from China Town come from cruel conditions and are sometimes illegally sold. Turtles require ten gallons per inch of shell and need a water heater, filter, dock, two light fixtures, a 5.0 UVB bulb, and a heat bulb. But what concerns me the most is that they are in a fish tank which means you have gravel in there. Turtles will eat gravel and die and also it'll make your tank disgusting. Turtles need a filter 3x the size of the tank so really you probably don't have the correct needs down and need to evaluate their situation. This is an ok setup..see the… [cont.]

How did Crocodiles and Turtles survive dinosaur extinction?
Q. How do you think that alligators, crocodiles, turtles, tortoises and other animals survived the disaster that killed off the other dinosaurs?
Asked by Aaron - Thu Jun 18 22:38:22 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The key thing to understand is lots of other animals and plants did die out at the same time as dinosaurs. Basically what we know is that about 65 million years ago, all large and medium-sized land animals (which of course includes dinosaurs), and tons of marine animals (such as the marine reptiles - Plesiosaurus, etc. - as well as animals such as Ammonites), and lots of plants and small animals (including many varieties of birds for example) all seem to have died out quite suddenly. More info at We don't really know why this happened, but the two main hypotheses are an asteroid impact or volcanic activity or some combination of both. The evidence for an asteroid impact is a layer of iridium (which comes from asteroids) found all over… [cont.]

A. My suggestion for someone who has Never had a turtle is to READ absolutely everything you can get your hands on before you decide on this. Some things you should know. 1) turtles will learn to recognize you, but will Never Be cuddly, lap sitting pets. 2) a turtle is a life long commitment for you and your children. Most species live 30 years or longer. 100 years or more is not uncommon. 3) The cost of the turtle is not the worst thing. The set up to properly care for a turtle can run to the thousands of dollars. The small 4 inch turtle you bring home from the store is Not going to stay that way. Research Any Species you think about taking home. Just like you would before you buy a new car.. your going to have the turtle MUCH… [cont.]

How do I get rid of turtles in my fishing pond?
Q. The pond is about 100 yards long and 50 yards wide. It is 6-8 feet deep and has bass and perch in it but it is infested with fish eating turtles.

A. If you know where the turtles like to bask, build a trap that you can place in the water. You can google around for the best ways to make one, but a quick and easy summary is that you'll need four 2" PVC pipes (about 2 feet long) with 90 degree connections to make a square. After you build that, use some chicken wire to build a cube to place underneath the PVC contraption and secure it with zip ties. Add pieces of wire on the outside so they have a ramp to climb on to the PVC pipe. Now you have a floating trap that is open on the top and enclosed on the sides and bottom by chicken wire. Place the trap where the turtles hang out, eventually they will climb aboard to bask in the sun, when they are startled or decide to plop back into… [cont.]

Asked by paige_squirrel_goddess - Mon Mar 12 13:28:36 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Your tank should be no smaller than 10 gallons per inch of turtle so in your case you would want to get at least a 50 to 60 gal. tank. If you could go larger, it will be better though since your turtles will continue to grow. The tank should be full with rocks and stuff and live plants for them to sit on and hide in, you should also have a turtle dock or some way for them to get completely out of the water. They need to be able to get out and dry off if they want and you should have a uvb/uva light over this area since turtles are cold blooded and get their heat from outside sources. You need to provide a light that will provide both uva and uvb since the turtle needs this light to grow, they need the uvb which is most like the sun to help… [cont.]

What are some better foods for my baby musk turtles besides pellets?
Q. I have two musk turtles, a razor back, and a stink pot musk. They are so cute. I have had them for about 8 months now. They are just a little bigger than the size of a quarter. What else can I feed them besides the hatchling pellets, and freeze dried blood worms?? I want to keep them as healthy as possible.

A. Pellets actually are a great source of stable food if your turtles actually eat them. They are very well balanced and don't really need to be rotated with anything else unless you want to give them a little treat. If your turtles eat the pellets, definitely stick with them. How old do Turtles have to be until they can move into an outdoor pond?
Q. I'm thinking of getting two turtles and wondering how old they will be when I can move them into an outdoor pond?
Asked by Matt - Tue Jun 2 22:45:28 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well it isn't so much a matter of age as it is knowing what the other conditions are. If the pond is well suited to the turtles, appropriate depth, temperature, water quality and predator proofing, sufficient food and basking areas even a hatchling turtle (aquatic) could safely be placed in it. The thing to do is research a bit on various turtles and there needs. If that seems a bit overwhelming I can give you specififc recommendations and options if you post the following: # of gallons Water is the pond constructed of where are you located (temp cycles and seasons matter a lot) city and state is plenty - no address info please filtration other pond inhabitants predator control - is the pond fenced? to keep other animals out and the… [cont.]

Can you put turtles and fish in the same tank?
Q. My mom wants a fish tank with some animals, like snails, fish, and a turtle. I know you can put snails and fish in the same tank, but what about turtles? Would a turtle need a seperate tank? I don't mind the turtles eating fish, I was just wondering if they could be kept together is all. We don't plan on keeping tropical fish with the turtle. Just regular fish you'd find at petsmart you know? Also, if they turtle was to eat the snail would that hurt the turtle?
Asked by unknown - Sun May 11 22:04:41 2008 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I know this from experience dont put your turtle with the fish, or you will be missing snails, and fish by morning. I have 5 red eared sliders, and they love fish. They ate all the fish that was in my tank so I started feeding them feeders as a treat. They got big quick. They came from Myrtle Beach , they were the size of a quarter, now they are the size of my fist. so, I would use separate tanks. You will love them (turtles) if you get some. They are so cool to watch!

How do I set up an outdoor pond for my turtles?
Q. I have 3 red eared slider turtles, approx a year and a half old. They are growing quickly and I wanted to create an outdoor pond environment for them. I live in the panhandle of Florida. How do i set it up? What is required? Do I build a wall around the pond? Will I have to worry about predators, like hawks and racoons? How do I provide a safe environment for my kids' pets but reclaim my living room from the massive aquarium?
Asked by ladycinnamon13 - Thu Apr 6 09:41:03 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A few different elements come into play: 1. The basic pond is constructed like any other. As long as it is large enough and has at least something they can crawl out on, it will be OK. 2. Cleanliness is an issue- turtles are really, really messy eaters and will fould a small pond quickly. Stocking it as a balanced environment will help but you probably want to include a way to easily drain and clean it. 3. Predators will be a big concern unless it is a really big pond with a really deep part. Racoons, skinks, and dogs will be the biggest worries. You also have some concerns with other animals coming to live in the pond. 4. One option that works for a lot of people is an above ground 'raised pool' feature- build a sturdy wall, fill the… [cont.]

A. My husband built a frame around the pond and covered it with mesh wire. Hebuilt a small door to allow access to feed and clean. He left enough space around the pond area...like 2 feet to allow them a basking area. We placed it in a semi-sunny area of the yard along with a good filtering system by Pondmaster. Depending on your climate you may or may not need a heater.

Asked by sammiefrank - Mon Oct 30 15:14:18 2006 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Hibernation Hibernation is a torpid period for the Red Ear Slider that occurs during the winter months. It is not necessary to hibernate captive RES and is generally not recommended. When your turtles are kept indoors year-round, there is probably nothing to change. If you keep your RES outdoors, you will need to bring them inside if your area experiences cold winters. RES that do hibernate do so in the thick muddy bottoms of ponds that are several feet deep and have a large surface area. Since they do not surface for oxygen because it is absorbed through the membranes of the mouth, throat and cloaca, well oxygenated water is a necessity. Most artificial and pre-formed ponds do not offer sufficient depth or conditions to achieve proper… [cont.]
