Turtles are reptiles of the order Testudines (the crown group of the superorder Chelonia), characterised by a special bony or cartilaginous shell developed from their ribs that acts as a shield. "Turtle" may either refer to the Testudines as a whole, or to particular Testudines which make up a form taxon that is not monophyletic—see also sea turtle, terrapin, tortoise, and the discussion below. The order Testudines includes both extant (living) and extinct species. The earliest known turtles date from 215 million years ago, making turtles one of the oldest reptile groups and a more ancient group than lizards and snakes. About 300 species are alive today, and some are highly endangered. Like other reptiles, turtles are ectotherms—varying their internal temperature according to the ambient environment, commonly called cold-blooded. However, leatherback sea turtle have noticeably higher body temperature than surrounding water because of their high metabolic rate. Like other amniotes (reptiles, dinosaurs, birds, and mammals), they breathe air and do not lay eggs underwater, although many species live in or around water. The largest turtles are aquatic. All turtles grow differently, unfortunately the only way to tell age accurately is to know their hatch date. With any reptiles, and particularly turtles, snakes and bearded dragons, it is VERY important to wash your hands with antibacterial soap both before and after handling, feeding or cleaning habitats. Be careful not to touch your eyes, mouth or nose while handling. After you're done being around them, wash hands agian with antibacterial soap and use some hand sanitizer gel, like Germ X. I have snakes and I buy the stuff by the big pump bottle. Answered by CLOSED MY ACCOUNT - Sun Oct 5 22:27:57 2008 How do sea turtles that are just hatched know to go exactly into the ocean?
Q. I see this all the time on tv and read it in books. But im curious to know how do new born sea turtles know to go right for the water? Even at night, when most sea turtles hatch, there is more light reflection from the moon off the sea than on land. If they do hatch in the daytime, the sea is still the brightest horizon (reflection from the sun). I did volunteer work with leatherback sea turtles, hawksbill sea turtles, and loggerhead sea turtles in Florida, Costa Rica, Panama, and the Philippines. If we found hatchlings on a well lit city beach, we used flashlights to attract them to the sea. In Florida, they have bumper stickers on cars that say, "Lights out for sea turtles". Meaning that people residing on beaches where turtles lay eggs should turn out their back patio lights during the night. Hatchlings are often found crossing… [cont.] Answered by Earthling - Mon Jan 5 17:47:20 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "turtles" Sea turtles can be seen around the clock on TurtleCam
